The specifics and the advantages and disadvantages of methodical approaches to the formation of the analytical basis for the further development of the food security strategy, the adoption of relevant strategic decisions, and the identification of priority areas of strategic planning are revealed. There is developed a method for estimating the state of food security of the county based on an objective system of indicators, which takes into account the components of the strategy and allows revealing the key directions of strategic planning for the further strengthening of food security. The proposed system of relative variables (indexes) for an objective assessment of food security trends suggests their comparison with statutory values or values favourable by certain criteria. Indicators for assessing the strategic level of food security are grouped as follows: assessing production trends and their compliance with domestic needs; dependence of food supply of the country and resource supply of the agricultural sector on import deliveries; estimation of stocks dynamics (ratio of production and consumption); assessing the quality and availability of food, balance of nutrition.
