    Protectionism in international trade: significance and effectiveness

    This paper looks into the international trade protectionism, its state today and transformations over time along with global factors that drove it through. The protective measures continue to be very crucial for governments to control their foreign trade, especially nowadays with global markets integrating more and more, trade conflicts getting harsher and the competition becoming geo-economically high. The comparison between the USA and South Korea shows two totally different protectionism models: the USA mainly imposes import barriers to maintain its market and support its strategic industries, whereas South Korea has an export-oriented policy where protectionist measures are intended to improve technological competitiveness. The study make attention to the tools of protectionist policy in detail and their effects on the economy both in the short and long run. The ups/downs for consumers and the national producers in terms of welfare and efficiency respectively, are also part of the analysis. The practical segment of the research includes the setting up of international investment projects for both Cleveland-Cliffs (USA) and SK Hynix (Republic of Korea) along with their appraisal. This is done through the use of the techniques such as Net Present Value (NPV), Profitability Index (PI), and Payback Period among others. The outcomes led to the identification of the investment appeal of government support under protectionist regimes and the molding of strategies for their best usage.
